I am on my first Globus trip exploring national parks in Colorado and Utah. One of my favorites so far is Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. I rented a board nearby and did some sandboarding and sand sledding. It is similar to snowboarding to me but you have to walk up the hill each time which is quite a workout. This is a must do and so happy that I am being shown around to all these national treasures that I may not have found on my own.

Repost 📷 by @chey_af: 📍Ston & Dubrovnik (5/2 Repost 📷 by @chey_af: 📍Ston & Dubrovnik (5/2-5/3)

We hopped on the coach on a rainy Croatian day & ventured onto our last stop but made sure to explore the Ston walls & have a delicious lunch first!

✨Ston has played a key role in salt distribution across Europe for centuries! We learned that it takes 40-45 days for salt to produce if weather is good, 10000 BC is when salt was founded, & it was a means of payment but also resulted in war which is why the walls were built to protect the salt pans.

✨We were disappointed to learn rocky waves canceled our sunset cruise when we arrived in Dubrovnik, but better safe than sorry even though we were looking forward to seeing the city walls from the Adriatic Sea. Instead, we walked around a scenic trail, found a bar inside a cave, & Adam found a romantic spot for us to have dinner at a yacht club near the water that was walking distance from our hotel. I had the most delicious soup, caprese salad, and $4 glass of house rosé (the house wine in Croatia is AMAZING).

✨The next day we had an early tour of the city, learned all fountain water is drinkable, and walked the city walls. We also learned that Lokrum Island is a quick 15 min boat ride from Dubrovnik and they practice Freikörperkultur (FKK) aka Free Body Culture 😏 but we didn’t have time to go see for ourselves.

✨Our last evening with our group was spent dressed up at the Bracovich Family Farm in Konavle. We had the most delicious wine, rakija, veal, & lavender cake slices. The hosts/guide surprised me & two other fellow Tauruses with candles & the group sang us all happy birthday which was so sweet.

It was an amazing first anniversary & birthday trip & I will cherish these memories forever 🥰

Repost 📷 by @chey_af: 📍Bobovisca (5/1) This Repost 📷 by @chey_af: 📍Bobovisca (5/1)

This part of our trip deserves its own highlight!

✨Adam's great grandmother is from a village (Bobovisca) on Brac so we stayed back after the excursion & Tamera helped arrange a taxi driver (Andrea) who spoke English to help take us to the village. We parked and started looking for the house his great grandmother grew up in. We thought we were looking for a little abandoned home but little did we know.

✨We initially gave the wrong family name & then the taxi driver asked about a second name so Adam called his mom to get more info & after sending us the ancestry info, we learned that “Cerinic” is actually the name we were looking for. There's only 2-3 families that still live in this village & we found someone to help show us the house which actually turned out to be a mansion. We had parked right in front of it all along! Ivanna (lady from village) also took us to the cemetery where some of Adam’s ancestors are buried & told us someone from Chile came looking for the same family name, only TWO weeks before us. So when Adam mentioned this to his mom, my MIL said “Oh yeah, Nuna said half the family went to America & the other half went to Chile.” So apparently he/we have some family in Chile too!

✨Andrea (taxi driver) and Ivanna (lady in village) began looking up the “Cerinic” name on Wikipedia & translating for us what they read. We learned the castle/museum we started at in the other village (Skrip) where the olive oil tasting was is actually where his family originally started then they moved to Bobovisca & they potentially have a couple other homes/castles in different parts of Brac and Split. They originally came as nobles from England.

✨Lastly, Andrea (taxi driver) was looking at the family history screenshots we had his mom send us and she said, “Hey, that’s my family name!” when she saw a specific one…so our 5th cousin was likely driving us around this whole time, too!

Such an amazing experience & we didn’t expect any of it, but the spontaneity of it all filled our cups!

This was by far my most favorite day of the trip! We want to go back to Split & do an island cruise & also stay in Sutivan at Hotel Lemongarden.

✨We stuck with a fun group & started the day walking around Split - learning about history, Diocletian’s palace, & saw some Game Of Thrones filming spots (we never watched it but still cool). I was so intrigued, I took so many notes during our trip. Our local guide, Tamera, also went with us to an optional excursion to Brac island. We took a ferry aka Jadrolinija to Brac & then the real adventure began!

✨The olive oil museum & tasting was amazing! My mouth waters thinking about that meal all the time. 5/1 is a national holiday but Tamera was able to get us into the castle near the museum & give us a tour. We learned later that day through our adventure to Bobovisca (a village where some of Adam’s family is from), that the castle we toured may actually be where his family originated 🤯

Repost 📷 by @chey_af: 📍Krka National Park + Repost 📷 by @chey_af: 📍Krka National Park + Split (4/30)

We woke up early this day & hopped on our coach bus to Split! But first we stopped at Krka National Park & even drove through the town Nicola Tesla was born in.

✨Our guide shared a hidden gem of a rest stop with gorgeous views & a café for a quick & delicious bite to eat. We stayed close to our guide & Adam took care of her lunch & she sat with us! We also learned that you need 1 euro to use public restrooms!

✨The national park guide asked Adam, “What’s the way to your lady’s heart?” and Adam said, “Ramen” which made everyone laugh, but the guide was trying to get him to say flowers to show us the Dalmatian Daisy which repels mosquitos. Dalmatian is pronounced “Dal-Mas-E-ahn” & Dalmatia is one of the 4 historical regions in Croatia. Irises are also the national flower of Croatia!

✨We made it to Split at the Hotel President & learned we had 1 of the 2 suites. We got cleaned up for our 2nd pre-planned full course dinner at a local restaurant & when they brought out a small pasta dish, we thought that was our meal. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that was the app, followed by salad, and then a delicious same-day freshly caught trout with spinach/potatoes & a coffee ice-cream dessert and of course delicious red cab to accompany the meal.

Repost 📷 by @chey_af: 📍Zagreb, Croatia (4/28 Repost 📷 by @chey_af: 📍Zagreb, Croatia (4/28 & 4/29)

Finally getting around to posting these! Tbh, we were least excited about this stop and we’re glad we started here vs ending here.

✨ Since we landed in Zagreb 3 days after my birthday, our travel agent had a chocolate cake & bottle of champagne waiting in the room for me. Adam doesn’t eat chocolate so I brought it down to our group’s welcome dinner & after some confusion, the hotel finally agreed to serve it for us.

✨ We stayed at The Canopy by Hilton & the breakfast buffet was by far the most beautiful spread I’ve ever seen. The fresh honeycomb was my favorite.

✨ After the morning tour (which btw I was fascinated by the city maps in Croatia because they were all sculpture like), we went to lunch & then walked all the way to the Nicola Tesla museum only to find out it closed 1 hour before we walked there. I noticed the benches were solar powered with phone charging and usb stations throughout the city. Nicola Tesla is a famous inventor, born in Croatia (and no Elon is not related to him but he was inspired by Tesla for his inventions and engineering).

✨ For dinner, we ended up at a Lebanese restaurant called Byblos after the first two places being a bust, and it was the best spontaneous decision ever. After an amazing dinner, we got caught in the rain walking back to the hotel & I forgot my umbrella so Adam and I huddled under his together. It rains randomly in Croatia, so bring an umbrella. Also, my Apple Watch says I walked over 13,000 steps this day 😜

It was fabulous to see the country with our experienced tour director, Henry. He’s been doing this for over 30 years and full of information about Ireland. Favorite moments were visiting Hillsborough Castle, Kylemore Abbey and Rathbaun Farm where we made scones and watched sheep herding. 🐑 🇮🇪 🍀
